Education, not health care
Lemongymfits courses and coaching are general education about exercise: strength training, cardio, class-style workouts, boxing and kickboxing for fitness, and how to plan your own training. They are not medical advice, a diagnosis, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, nutrition therapy or a treatment for any condition, and they do not replace a doctor, a physiotherapist, a dietitian or any other health professional.
The lessons are written for a general adult audience and cannot take your individual health, history or circumstances into account. On the coaching plans, your coach adapts your training to what you tell them, but does not examine you, cannot assess a medical condition and does not diagnose or treat anything. Buying a course or a plan does not create a relationship with a health professional.
Ask your doctor before you start if
- you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, or have ever had chest pain, fainting or severe dizziness, especially during exercise;
- you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or gave birth in the last few months;
- you have had recent surgery, a recent injury, a hernia or a joint replacement;
- you have a bone, joint or back problem, osteoporosis or a condition that could get worse with exercise;
- you have asthma, diabetes, epilepsy or any condition a doctor is treating, or you take medication that affects your heart rate, blood pressure or balance;
- you have not exercised for a long time, or you are recovering from an eating disorder.
The PAR-Q+ physical activity readiness questionnaire is a useful, free way to check whether you should speak to a doctor first.
Stop immediately if you feel
- chest pain or pressure, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or unusual shortness of breath;
- dizziness, light-headedness, nausea or blurred vision;
- sharp, stabbing or shooting pain, pain in a joint, or pain that spreads down an arm or a leg.
Rest, and seek medical help if the symptom does not pass quickly. Emergencies: call your local emergency number (112 in Portugal and the European Union). In Portugal you can also call the SNS 24 health line on 808 24 24 24.
Specific risks
- Strength training: learn the technique with light loads first, use collars and a safe set-up, and never train to failure on exercises where a bar could trap you without safety supports.
- Cardio and intervals: build up gradually. High-intensity intervals are not for the first weeks of training or for anyone a doctor has told to avoid strenuous exercise.
- Combat Sports: the course teaches strikes into the air or into a bag only. Never spar or strike another person without a qualified coach and protective equipment. Use hand wraps and bag gloves for bag work and check that the bag is securely hung.
- Group Classes: if you run a class for friends, each person trains at their own risk and should read this notice. Clear the space of furniture and trip hazards.
- Food and recovery: the nutrition content is general education for healthy adults. It is not a diet. Anyone with a medical condition, a history of disordered eating, or who is pregnant should follow the advice of a doctor or a registered dietitian.
